If water is running right now
Shut the main valve where the service line enters the building — in most DeKalb homes that is on the basement wall facing the street, near the meter. Open the lowest faucets to drain the pressure. Cut power to the area at the breaker if water is near electrical, but only if you can reach the panel without standing in water. Then call (815) 849-0091.
If the valve will not close, the City of DeKalb Water Division can shut the curb stop — 815-748-2050.
If you smell gas: leave the building without touching switches, plugs or phones indoors. From outside, call 911 and Nicor Gas on 888-642-6748. They come out at any hour at no charge. Call us afterward to test, locate and repair the house piping.

- What you have noticed, and roughly when it started
- Your water meter reading, if you can get to it — including whether the small low-flow indicator is moving with everything shut off
- The age of the house, and whether you know what the pipes are made of
- Whether the basement is finished, which changes the repair options significantly
- Anything that has already been tried, and by whom
- Whether the water is currently shut off
None of it is essential. If all you can tell us is that the floor is wet, that is enough to get moving.
